Gender apartheid must include punishment for crimes against humanity

In an open letter Friday, April 18, the Transitional Justice Coordination Group said that "systematic discrimination and discrimination against Afghan women and girls by a misogynistic regime ruling [the Taliban] has reached a level of alarm and has severely affected women's rights to education, employment, freedom of movement, freedom of expression, access to justice and health care."

The letter said the move would serve as a key step in acknowledging and addressing the grave human rights violations that women and girls face on a daily basis in many countries, particularly Afghanistan.

According to the Transitional Justice Coordination Group, this dire situation undermines not only the principles of gender equality and justice, but also the structure of humanity.

This organization founded in Afghanistan in 2008 and joined by human rights organizations and transitional justice experts and activists, the group believes that incorporating gender apartheid as a crime against humanity sends a strong message to the international community and emphasizes the intolerable nature of gender-based discrimination and violence and the international community's determination to combat all forms of discrimination and violence, no matter where it occurs, who will be affected with.

Discussions on the issue are scheduled to begin in April at the Sixth Committee of the United Nations.

Prior to the letter, Human Rights Watch also requested that gender apartheid be recognized as a crime against humanity and incorporated into the convention.

The Afghan Transitional Justice Coordination Group has called on members of the UN Sixth Committee to place gender apartheid as a crime against humanity. The Afghan Transitional Justice Coordination Group said in an open letter that the move would serve as a critical step in acknowledging and addressing the severe human rights violations that women and girls face on a daily basis in many countries, particularly Afghanistan.
