U.S. envoy calls for scrutiny of shooting of Afghan refugees by Iranian border guards

Reina Amiri, the US Special Representative for Women and Human Rights in Afghanistan, has called for a full, comprehensive, transparent and accountable investigation into the shooting of Afghan refugees at the Sarawan border by the Islamic Republic's border guards.
"People fleeing severe repression should be treated with dignity and humanity, not with further violence and harassment," Ms. Amiri wrote in a note on her X page on Friday.
Iranian border guards shot dead more than 200 Afghan citizens who tried to seek refuge in Iran on Sunday evening, Iranian border guards said.
Meanwhile, Meysam Mehdipour, deputy media spokesman for the Iranian president's special representative for Afghanistan, denied that Iranian border guards had shot Afghan refugees.
He said the area where Afghan refugees were allegedly shot was a "security area" and migrants and refugees should not travel through the area.
However, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the group's various agencies and diplomatic representatives were investigating the shooting of Afghan refugees by Iranian border guards.
Mujahid added that the Taliban would take the necessary decision after the incident became clear.
The shooting of Afghan refugees by Iranian border guards has sparked widespread reactions.
This is not the first time Iranian border guards have shot at migrants.
