Russian expert: Taliban will fall and Afghanistan will head towards civil war

He said the Taliban remained in power only because of US support, adding: "This group will not be saved with US money or with the support of Sirajuddin Haqqani."

Serrenko also noted that with the outbreak of civil war, foreign countries would withdraw from Afghanistan and Russia should intervene, although it is currently reluctant to do so because of the Ukraine crisis.

He also pointed to the intensification of competition within the Taliban and the increase in armed resistance against the group.

In the end, Serenko called the Taliban regime illegitimate and predicted that their fate would be similar to that of the Afghan communist regime, which fell after a long time.

Andrei Serenko, head of the Center for Contemporary Afghan Studies in Moscow, predicted that the Taliban would soon fall and Afghanistan would enter a new civil war.
