Taliban sentence journalist to 1.5 years in prison

The organization said in a statement on Wednesday that the arrest of Mehdi Ansari and the charges against him were illegal and against freedom of expression.

The Afghanistan Organization for the Protection of Journalists (APJO) condemned the Taliban's action, saying the arrest of Mehdi Ansari and other journalists was a serious threat to freedom of expression and a warning issue for the Afghan media community.

"The Afghanistan Journalists Protection Organization is committed to defending the rights of Afghan journalists and works with all institutions and individuals to realize freedom of expression, human rights and media independence," the organization said in a statement.

The Taliban's primary court in Kabul has reportedly sentenced Mehdi Ansari to one and a half years in prison on charges of "propaganda" against the group.

Mehdi Ansari was arrested by Taliban intelligence on May 16 this year in the Pol-e-Khushk area of Kabul's Barchi Plain.

The Afghanistan Journalists' Protection Organization (AJP) has expressed concern that Mehdi Ansari, a journalist for the Afghan News Agency, has been sentenced to one and a half years in prison by the Taliban.
