Richard Bennett: Taliban's policies have sharply deepened violence against women

In a video message posted on X on Tuesday, Bennett said the Taliban's law had institutionalized systematic gender discrimination and repression, referring to the 16-day campaign to combat violence against women.

He also stressed the Taliban's responsibility for violating the rights of Afghan citizens, especially women.

The UN Special Rapporteur also pointed to the increase in domestic violence under Taliban rule and the psychological problems caused by it, saying there were credible reports of violence and sexual harassment of women in Taliban prisons.

He also stressed the need for a comprehensive strategy that includes criminal justice.

Richard Bennett, the UN special rapporteur for Afghanistan, says a way must be found to convince the Taliban to change course to end violence against women.
