CMES: Iran has moved closer to the hardline TBN by distancing itself from Persian-speaking Afghans

Iran has refused to provide any armed support to the Taliban, the Middle East Research Center said in an analysis on Tuesday.

The center says Iran's failure to support the armed opposition to the Taliban has led the Front of Resistance to seek alternative supporters such as Tajikistan.

The analysis says the Islamic Republic has taken a new approach to supporting the Taliban and is trying to become a multi-religious Islamic power by establishing new relations with Tandoor groups; The handover of the Afghan embassy in Tehran is said to be an example of this approach.

The Center for Middle East Studies said in its analysis, pointing to the close ties between Qom and Kandahar, that Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada had links to a group called the Helmand Council, known as the Iranian Taliban, which had bases in Iran.

The analysis adds that despite differences between the Taliban and Iran over irrigation and border management, relations between Qom and Kandahar remain strong.

The Center for Middle Eastern Studies says in an analysis that the Islamic Republic has strengthened its ties with the Taliban by distancing itself from its former Persian-speaking allies in Afghanistan, especially the Afghan National Resistance Front.
