The Daily Mail reported that the couple were arrested for teaching parenting skills to Afghan mothers, but the Taliban have not yet provided an explanation for the action.
Peter and Barbie, who had been running educational centers in Afghanistan for 18 years, were reportedly arrested by Taliban forces on Saturday, February 13, after returning to their home in Bamyan.
The couple initially informed their children via text message that they had been arrested by the Taliban's Ministry of Interior and that they were fine; but after three days, their communication suddenly stopped.
The Daily Mail reported that the couple's home was searched by the Taliban and their staff were interrogated to determine whether they were promoting a particular religion. Peter and Barbie, who were married in Kabul in 1970, have had a deep connection to Afghanistan.
After the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, the group asked them to leave Afghanistan, but they decided to stay because they believed that they should not abandon Afghan citizens in difficult circumstances.
Reports indicate that two elderly British citizens, Peter (79 years old) and Barbie Reynolds (75 years old), have been detained by the Taliban in Bamyan Province.
