Taliban leader orders punishment for those who skip congregational prayers

According to the Taliban leader's order, five daily prayers in congregation are "mandatory" for officials and officials of government departments under Taliban control, and if they leave prayers, they must be punished.

"Anyone who leaves congregational prayers without a Shari'a excuse should be punished," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a decree on Thursday.

The first article of the decree states: "Praying in congregation is obligatory according to the Shari'ah and leaving the congregation is subject to tazir [punishment]."

Article 2 of the decree, attributed to the Taliban leader, states that members and officials of Taliban ministries and departments are obliged by Sharia to be committed to their prayers and to perform prayers in congregation at the appointed times.

According to the Taliban leader's order, the relevant ministry or department official is obliged to appropriately encourage the leaver of congregational prayer in accordance with Hanafi jurisprudence.

In his decree, Hibatullah Akhundzada called the abandonment of congregational prayers a sign of "hypocrisy.

A Taliban spokesman said the group's leader had issued a new decree on prayers.
