Iranian Foreign Ministry: We use all expressions to get our water rights from Afghanistan

Mr. Baghaei said in a press conference on Monday (January 7) that the Iranian ambassador to Afghanistan is seriously pursuing the issue of water rights.

He emphasized that since the planning of building water dams in Afghanistan, this issue has been on the agenda of the Islamic Republic.

This Islamic Republic official has noted that based on good neighborliness, customary international law, and agreements, the Taliban must provide Iran with water rights.

Iran's water rights, which flow from the Helmand River, have been a contentious issue between the Islamic Republic and the Taliban.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly accused the Taliban of violating their commitment on the issue of water rights, but the Taliban have always emphasized that they are committed to the water rights agreement.

Although Iran has improved its relations with the Taliban since their takeover, the issue of Iran's water rights from Afghan waters has become a serious tension.

Esmail Baghaei, spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, says that the Islamic Republic will use all means to secure its water rights from border and shared rivers.
