New UNAMA report; Taliban confirms cases of personal revenge against returnees to Afghanistan

This comes as the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) announced in a recent report that former government officials, former military personnel, civil activists, journalists, and human rights defenders who have been forcibly returned to Afghanistan have faced revenge, torture, and detention by the Taliban.

Fitrat wrote on Thursday, 2 Asad, in a post on the social media platform X that these incidents are mostly of the nature of personal disputes and revenge and should not be linked to political issues.

He added that UNAMA, by publishing such reports, increases concerns and engages in a form of propaganda.

The deputy spokesperson for the Taliban emphasized that all returnees are covered by a general amnesty, and the Taliban has no hostility or politically motivated vengeful behavior toward them. He also stated that in case such incidents occur, the Taliban will investigate and punish the perpetrators.

The UNAMA office and the United Nations Human Rights Office announced in a joint report on Thursday that former military personnel, women’s rights activists, journalists, and members of civil society, after returning to Afghanistan, have been forced to live in hiding due to fear of revenge, torture, and detention by the Taliban.

Hamdullah Fitrat, deputy spokesperson for the Taliban, in response to the recent report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), stated that some of the deported migrants to Afghanistan have faced instances of "personal" revenge in various regions.
