Iran announces readiness to mediate between Pakistan and Taliban

He announced that Tehran is fully prepared to help reduce tensions and mediate between the two sides.

According to a statement from Iran's Foreign Ministry, Araghchi expressed concern over the current state of relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan, deeming the continuation of talks and joint efforts to resolve disputes essential. During the same call, Pakistan's Foreign Minister provided a brief report on recent discussions between his country and the Taliban in Istanbul and stressed the importance of regional stability and calm.

These remarks come as negotiations between Islamabad and the Taliban in Istanbul have concluded without results.

Earlier, Khawaja Asif, Pakistan's Defense Minister, had stated that these meetings had reached a "complete deadlock" and that no new round of talks is currently planned. According to him, the return of the Pakistani delegation "empty-handed" indicates that even the mediators no longer hold much hope for the Taliban.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, has also confirmed the failure of the Istanbul talks and wrote on X that these discussions "yielded no achievements." Nevertheless, he emphasized that the Taliban will not allow Afghan soil to be used against any other country.

Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, in a phone call with his Pakistani counterpart, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, emphasized the necessity of continuing consultations between Islamabad and the Taliban with the participation of influential regional countries.
