Arbitrary detentions; US warns citizens against travel to Afghanistan

The embassy, operating from Qatar, announced in a statement released on Tuesday (28 Asad) that American citizens should refrain from traveling to Afghanistan.

The U.S. Embassy for Afghanistan has also issued warnings regarding travel by its citizens to Myanmar, Eritrea, Iran, Nicaragua, North Korea, Russia, and Venezuela.

This warning comes at a time when the number of foreign tourists, particularly adventurous social media influencers, traveling to Afghanistan has increased.

In the past, the Taliban has detained several American citizens, in some cases using them as leverage to secure the release of their members from U.S. prisons.

Meanwhile, the U.S. government has demanded that the Taliban provide clear information regarding the fate of Mahmoud Shah Habibi, an Afghan-American citizen; however, the Taliban claims to have no knowledge of Habibi’s presence in Afghanistan. Sources close to the matter suggest that Habibi’s possible detention could be linked to the killing of the former al-Qaeda leader and intelligence cooperation with the CIA.

This warning once again highlights Washington’s concerns about the safety of American citizens in Afghanistan, particularly in a context where some foreign nationals, despite the threats, enter the country for tourism or adventure.

The United States Embassy for Afghanistan has issued a statement warning that American citizens traveling to Afghanistan face the risk of arbitrary detention by the Taliban.
