Richard Bennett: Impunity for human rights abusers will not last

On Tuesday (17 Saratan), in a statement, he described this action as a significant step toward achieving justice for the women and girls of Afghanistan.

Bennett added that this warrant sends a clear message to countries seeking to normalize relations with the Taliban.

He urged the governments of the world not to recognize a regime that denies the human rights and dignity of half of Afghanistan’s population.

This comes as the International Criminal Court has announced that, due to severe human rights violations, it has issued arrest warrants for Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban leader, and Abdul Hakim Haqqani, the group’s chief justice.

The Second Pre-Trial Chamber of this court announced on Tuesday, 17 Saratan, that these two Taliban officials are being prosecuted for crimes against humanity and their role in systematic persecution and discrimination based on gender against women and girls.

Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Afghanistan, has welcomed the issuance of an arrest warrant for Hibatullah Akhundzada, the leader of the Taliban.
