Controversial peace proposal; Kyiv: US peace plan is a threat to Ukraine's territorial integrity

Kirill Dmitriev, the Kremlin's special investment representative and a figure close to Vladimir Putin, described this plan in a speech on Friday as an action to "stop the war and save Ukrainian lives."

In a post on the social network X, he wrote:

"The war hawks' propaganda prevents it from being seen that the Trump administration's peace proposal is designed to prevent further destruction of Ukraine."

According to sources who spoke with Reuters, the formation of this proposal resulted from secret consultations between Dmitriev and Steve Witkoff, the special representative of the U.S. president.

Reports indicate that Dmitriev has sought in recent years to strengthen his communication channels with Trump administration officials.

He continued: "Those who oppose this plan should be investigated; because some countries and factions benefit from the continuation of the war."

One day after this proposal was presented to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, officials of that country announced that the plan includes clauses that could affect Ukraine's political and security future, including the cession of part of its territory to Russia and a reduction in military capabilities.

Zelenskyy reacted by saying that this plan "undermines Ukraine's national dignity and freedom" and emphasized that no program that harms Ukraine's territorial integrity would be acceptable.

Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine's Foreign Minister, also announced that he had discussed this proposal with the foreign ministers of France, the United Kingdom, Poland, and Finland and reviewed the results of the consultations with the president. He emphasized that Ukraine's goal is "to achieve a just peace" rather than "surrender to political pressure."

While the United States describes this plan as a way to end one of the longest and most costly contemporary wars, Ukraine sees it as a direct threat to its national security. This difference of opinion indicates that the path to reaching a peace agreement will remain complex and challenging.

Russia has announced that the recent U.S. peace plan for the Ukraine war is designed to prevent further advances, reduce human casualties, and avoid the loss of territories under Kyiv's control; a plan that, according to Ukrainian officials, requires extensive concessions from the country and has raised serious concerns.
