UN: More than half of Afghanistan's population needs vital aid

Stéphane Dujarric said on Friday (24 Asad) during a press briefing that the Taliban have imposed a series of restrictive policies that have deprived women and girls of education, work opportunities, and public life.

Referring to the Taliban's widespread restrictions against women and girls, he emphasized that women in Afghanistan are highly vulnerable.

The spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General described humanitarian aid to women and girls as essential and a lifeline for them.

He also added that since the beginning of the current year, 1.7 million Afghan citizens have returned to the country from Iran and Pakistan.

Stéphane Dujarric, noting the increasing number of returnees to Afghanistan, said that needs are rapidly escalating, and most returnees are struggling to find shelter and economic opportunities.

Four years after the Taliban's return to power, the situation for women in Afghanistan is critically dire. Widespread restrictions on education, employment, and social participation have made women and girls highly vulnerable and have limited their opportunities for personal and economic development. At the same time, the country's economy is under severe pressure, and more than half of the population is in need of vital assistance. The return of millions of migrants from neighboring countries has intensified the need for shelter and economic opportunities, further complicating Afghanistan's humanitarian and economic situation.

The spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General announced that four years after the Taliban's return to power, more than half of Afghanistan's population is in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
