From women's ban to closure; Sources: Taliban close UNAMA office in Nangarhar

Sources reported on Wednesday, 15 Asad, that the Taliban initially banned female employees from entering the office; subsequently, they issued an order to completely shut down the office.

Sources added that Taliban fighters insulted UNAMA staff, calling them "apostates" and "puppets of the infidels."

Bilal Sarwary, a well-known Afghan journalist, also noted in a post on X, quoting his sources, that the UNAMA office had been closed by the Taliban governor in Nangarhar. According to Sarwary, the governor emphasized that all United Nations offices located in this compound must vacate the premises.

The United Nations office in Nangarhar has been active in eastern Afghanistan for over two decades; however, this decision has faced strong criticism.

The significant activities of this UN mission in Nangarhar included humanitarian support, human rights documentation, and advisory services at the local level.

However, neither the Taliban nor UNAMA have yet made an official statement on this matter.

Local sources in Nangarhar report that the office of the United Nations political mission (UNAMA) in Nangarhar province has been closed on the orders of Naeem Barich, the Taliban governor of the province.
