Ahmad Mojtaba Mohammadi, a human rights activist, has been in Taliban prison for 9 days now.

According to information, Mohammadi had been forcibly deported from Iran about a week before his arrest. He had been active for years in defending human rights, justice, and freedom of expression, and was considered one of the defenders of the civil rights of Afghan refugees in Iran.

Civil society groups say that his sudden arrest by the Taliban is "an example of increasing pressure" on human rights activists and an effort to silence civil society in Afghanistan.

According to them, the arrest of Mohammadi is not only a violation of individual freedoms but also means the suppression of efforts aimed at improving societal welfare and safeguarding human values.

The statement emphasized: "Human rights organizations strongly demand a legal explanation regarding the arrest of Ahmad Mojtaba Mohammadi and his immediate release."

It also warned that the continuation of harassment, intimidation, and imprisonment of human rights activists could pose a serious threat to the future of civil society in Afghanistan.

The Taliban has not yet officially commented on the arrest of Ahmad Mojtaba Mohammadi.

It is worth noting that since 2021, when the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan, human rights activists, women's rights defenders, journalists, and civil society members have consistently faced pressure, threats, and arbitrary arrests. Many of those arrested have not been tried through a legal process, and their families have remained unaware of their places of detention. Some have been released after months of harsh imprisonment and forced confessions; however, they continue to be subjected to interrogation and threats.

The Organization of Afghan Civil Society and Human Rights Institutions announced in a statement that Ahmad Mojtaba Mohammadi, spokesperson for the People's Unity Social Council of Parwan Province, a human rights activist, and the official representative of this institution in Iran, was arrested 9 days ago by Taliban intelligence forces in Parwan Province and is still in the custody of this group.
