Amrullah Saleh's defense of Ashraf Ghani provokes strong reaction from two former security officials

On Saturday, Saleh shared part of Ghani’s statements in which political critics of the republic system were accused of “arrogance” and “ingratitude.”

In those remarks, Ghani had warned that isolating the republic system could turn Afghanistan into a “large roofless prison.”

Rangin Dadfar Spanta, the former National Security Advisor, in response to this stance, called Ashraf Ghani an “innate liar” and “mentally ill” and urged Saleh to “distance himself from this path for the sake of the homeland.”

Spanta sharply criticized Saleh’s continued support for someone he believes is responsible for the collapse of the republic system.

Rahmatullah Nabil, the former head of National Security, also expressed regret over Amrullah Saleh’s renewed support for Ashraf Ghani by republishing an open letter from 2019. In that letter, Nabil had warned that Ghani’s approaches had led to ethnic divisions, the collapse of public trust, and an increasing gap between the people and the government.

Amrullah Saleh has repeatedly cited the Doha Agreement between the United States and the Taliban as the main reason for the collapse of the previous system and has blamed Ashraf Ghani’s political opponents, especially some jihadi figures, for this downfall.

Amrullah Saleh, the former First Vice President of Afghanistan, by republishing a portion of Ashraf Ghani’s remarks in support of his performance, provoked strong reactions from Rangin Dadfar Spanta and Rahmatullah Nabil, two former security officials.
