Earthquake death toll rises in eastern Afghanistan; At least 269 dead, hundreds injured

The epicenter of this earthquake, which was reported at 5.4 magnitude, was in Kunar Province, but neighboring provinces have also been affected.

According to local sources, successive aftershocks occurring every few minutes have made rescue operations difficult and brought new dangers. Landslides and mountain collapses have blocked many routes to the Chawki and Noorgul districts, hindering access for relief teams to remote areas.

Taliban officials warn that, given the people still trapped under rubble and limited access to affected areas, the possibility of an increase in the number of victims remains serious.

Local Taliban officials in eastern Afghanistan say the number of victims from last night's earthquake has increased dramatically. The latest statistics from the Disaster Management Department of Kunar Province indicate that at least 269 people have been killed and more than 568 injured.
