UN: Afghan citizens are the largest population in need of asylum

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has stated that in the past five months, at least 1.2 million Afghan citizens have left the country, and over 10 million others have been forced to abandon their homes.


According to the statistics of this agency, Afghan citizens constitute the largest refugee population in need of resettlement. Following them are citizens of Syria, South Sudan, Sudan, Rohingya, and Congo.


According to the agency, in the past year, 116,000 refugees were able to rebuild their lives through resettlement under the supervision of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.


Meanwhile, the Afghanistan section of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has reported that in the first five months of the current year, over 393,000 Afghan citizens have been deported from Iran and Pakistan.


While the United Nations has reported an unprecedented increase in the migration of Afghan citizens, the Taliban, rejecting this report, has claimed that millions have returned over the past four years.

Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the United Nations, has announced that in 2026, 2.5 million refugees will require resettlement.
