Afghanistan Press Center: Taliban violate journalists and media freedom 190 times in past year

The center, on Thursday, 23 Asad (August), on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the Taliban's return to power, published its annual report on the state of media in Afghanistan.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center stated that the Taliban, after enacting the Taliban's morality law, has significantly intensified media suppression, with violations of media and journalists' rights increasing by at least 9 cases compared to the previous year.

According to the report's statistics, the Taliban has detained at least 45 journalists in the past year, and currently, at least 10 journalists remain in Taliban prisons.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center wrote that over the past year, 32 television stations, including local branches of the national radio and television, 12 private television stations, and five radio stations have been shut down by the Taliban for various reasons.

This media advocacy center emphasized that, in addition to the reduction of media financial resources, the Taliban has severely restricted media content production.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) previously warned in its quarterly report that the activities of private media in Afghanistan are becoming increasingly restricted each day, and the information dissemination space in the country has narrowed unprecedentedly.

Based on statistics from the Afghanistan Media Support Organization, from August 2021 to July 2025, at least 539 cases of violence against journalists have been recorded.

UNAMA has warned that the continuation of this trend has severely limited the Afghan people's access to free and independent information and has placed the country's media environment on the brink of complete collapse.

This comes as the Taliban, upon their return to power, have exerted increasing pressure on the media, repeatedly detaining, torturing, and imprisoning journalists and media workers.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center announced that it has recorded 190 cases of violations of journalists' and media freedom by the Taliban over the past year.
