Afghan education activist Pushtane Durrani receives Amnesty International USA award

The statement said that these two women "are at the forefront of defending human rights, and we honor their efforts with this award."

Pashtana Durrani, founder of an educational network, is one of the recipients of this award due to her fundamental role in providing safe education for girls under the restrictive conditions imposed by the Taliban.

Ms. Durrani, a graduate of Harvard University, also works as an international researcher at the Wellesley Centers for Women and is the author of the book "The Last One to Eat, the Last One to Learn"; a book that narrates her personal experiences on the path to creating this educational network.

This award is given each year to women who have made remarkable and impactful efforts in support of human rights, especially the rights of women and children.

The Ginetta Sagan Award is named in honor of one of the resistance fighters in World War II and is awarded along with a $20,000 grant; assistance that supports the high-risk and vital activities of women’s rights and human rights defenders around the world.

Amnesty International USA announced on Saturday, in a statement, that Pashtana Durrani, an education and human rights activist from Afghanistan, and Yasmin Romero Apuya, a feminist representative of the Wayuu people in Colombia, have become the recipients of the prestigious Ginetta Sagan Award.
