Taliban shut down Shamshad Radio and TV broadcasts

On Saturday, 26 Mizan, the center, in a statement expressing concern over the suspension of this media outlet’s broadcasts, described the action as direct and explicit interference in the affairs of a free media outlet and condemned it.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center stated that the Taliban accused Shamshad Television of failing to properly cover the recent conflict between Taliban fighters and Pakistani military, as well as Pakistan’s attacks on Afghanistan, and of not defending the Taliban’s stance and actions against Pakistan.

So far, Shamshad Television officials have not commented on the matter.

Shamshad Television, a private media outlet, was established and began operations in Kabul in 1384 (2005) with investment from Fazl Karim.

In the Afghanistan Journalists Center’s statement, it is stated: “The action of the ruling administration in halting the broadcasts of Shamshad Radio and Television is a clear interference in the affairs of a free media outlet and is condemned. It is obvious that a news media outlet must operate based on the principles and standards of journalism and can only be subject to legal action in case of a violation.”

The Afghanistan Journalists Center has called on the Taliban to reconsider their decision and allow Shamshad Radio and Television to resume their broadcasts as soon as possible.

Additionally, this institution has urged the Taliban to refrain from threatening and punishing free media outlets and, instead of continuing the trend of suppression, intensifying restrictions, and imposing their demands—which may change with shifting interests and approaches—to create an open and fear-free environment so that everyone’s voice can be heard.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center announced that the broadcasts of Shamshad Radio and Television have been halted by order of the Taliban intelligence.
