Starmer: Britain to recognise Palestine before UN summit

According to reports, the main topic of this session will be Palestinian sovereignty following decades of occupation and apartheid by Israel.

The British government stated in July that it would not change its longstanding approach to recognizing the state of Palestine unless Israel halts its genocidal war in Gaza, commits to a sustainable and long-term peace process leading to a two-state solution, and allows more aid to enter the Gaza Strip.

However, the situation in Gaza has significantly worsened in recent weeks, leading to a catastrophe, as the Israeli military continues its systematic destruction of Gaza City to seize it while simultaneously besieging and displacing the famine-stricken population of the region.

According to reports, daily attacks by Israeli soldiers and raids by settlers in the occupied West Bank also continue, and Israel is advancing plans to annex this Palestinian territory and “bury the idea of establishing a contiguous Palestinian state with occupied East Jerusalem as its capital.”

Meanwhile, the Israeli government has criticized the United Kingdom and more than 75 percent of the United Nations member states that have officially recognized Palestinian sovereignty, claiming that this stance is “rewarding terrorism.”

Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has announced that the country will recognize Palestine on Sunday, two days before the start of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
