UN: US peace plan to end war in Gaza inconsistent with international principles

The emphasized that this plan does not guarantee the Palestinian people's right to self-determination, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in accordance with the requirements of international law.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Prime Minister has declared that Israel will "forcibly" resist the formation of a Palestinian state. This stance is clearly in conflict with the International Court of Justice's opinion, which states that the realization of the right to self-determination should not be subject to negotiations.

The UN experts, while expressing hope for the establishment of a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, stressed that any peace plan must fully protect the human rights of Palestinians and not lead to increased oppression or injustice.

They further added: "We accept parts of the peace plan, including a permanent ceasefire, the immediate release of hostages, the entry of humanitarian aid under UN supervision, the prevention of forced displacement in Gaza, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the non-annexation of territory. These are, in fact, requirements of international law and should not be contingent on a formal peace plan."

The experts concluded by warning: "Imposing peace at any cost, without regard for the principles of law and justice, is a recipe for greater injustice, future violence, and lasting instability."

United Nations experts warned in a statement that key elements of the United States' peace plan to end the war in Gaza are inconsistent with the fundamental principles of international law and the 2024 advisory opinion of International Court of Justice, which calls for an end to Israel's unlawful presence in the occupied Palestinian territories.
