UN Special Rapporteur: Pakistan should stop deporting Afghan refugees

On Tuesday (September 2), Mr. Bennett wrote in a post on the social media platform “X” that, under the current circumstances, suspending deportation programs and focusing on humanitarian aid by Pakistan would be “the act of a compassionate neighbor” and should be considered an urgent priority.

He emphasized that Pakistan could play a crucial role in alleviating the suffering of the survivors of this disaster by demonstrating solidarity and cooperation.

In recent months, Pakistan and Iran have intensified the deportation of Afghan migrants. On Monday alone, approximately three thousand Afghan families returned to Afghanistan from the borders of these two countries.

The United Nations and other international organizations have repeatedly expressed concern over the widespread deportation of Afghan migrants. These organizations have called for the voluntary and dignified return of migrants based on a clear plan. They believe that Afghanistan is currently grappling with profound humanitarian crises, including the consequences of climate change, and that returning migrants without proper preparation could exacerbate these crises.

Richard Bennett, the UN Human Rights Council’s Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan, has called on Pakistan to at least temporarily halt the deportation of Afghan migrants in the wake of a deadly earthquake in eastern Afghanistan.
