US State Department: Taliban continue to take revenge on Afghan citizens

On Tuesday, August 21, the ministry released this report, highlighting severe restrictions on women, arbitrary detentions, and the suppression of Afghan citizens' freedoms, stating that the Taliban have significantly violated human rights in 2024, with respect for women's rights having markedly declined compared to the previous year.

The report states that the Taliban's enforcement of the "Promotion of Virtue" law has imposed strict restrictions on all citizens and has further intensified pressures.

Additionally, the Taliban and ISIS have arbitrarily and unlawfully committed targeted killings and acts of revenge against individuals associated with the previous government.

The U.S. State Department, pointing to severe restrictions on the media, stated that journalists have been threatened, detained, and tortured. According to the report, over the past year, more than 180 cases of press freedom violations have been recorded, most of which involved the detention of women's rights activists, journalists, and Taliban critics.

The report also mentions the continuation of corporal punishments, the recruitment and training of children in Taliban forces, arbitrary detentions, forced disappearances, and the lack of access to lawyers for prisoners.

The U.S. State Department emphasized that the Taliban have shown no commitment to adhering to international human rights laws and, in many cases, disregard these laws.

It is worth noting that since their return to power, the Taliban have severely violated the human rights of Afghan citizens by imposing restrictions, suppressing journalists, human rights activists, and former military personnel.

The U.S. State Department, in its annual report on the human rights situation in Afghanistan under Taliban rule, has addressed numerous instances of serious human rights violations.
