Brother of journalist Hamid Farhadi arrested by Taliban calls for his release

His family says that their days are spent in anxiety and anticipation, and the health condition of this journalist is concerning.

According to the brother of this journalist, their mother has been waiting for her son's return throughout this period and lives each day with the hope of hearing fresh news about him.

He said: "Our life has no meaning without him. Days and nights pass with thoughts of him, and we pray that he returns home again."

His family adds that their last visit took place about a month ago, and since then, they have not been able to meet with him again. The brother of this journalist, expressing concern about the cold weather, said: "During the last visit, winter had not yet arrived, and we didn't bring him warm clothes. We don't know what conditions he is in now amid the cold nights of these days."

According to reports, this journalist was arrested from his home in Kabul by Taliban intelligence in September 2024. After a few weeks, he was sentenced to two years in prison in a court without the presence of a defense lawyer.

Human rights sources say that the only document presented against him was his reports on the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan.

Amnesty International, in response to this matter, has called his arrest and sentencing "unlawful and arbitrary" and has demanded that the Taliban release him immediately. In a statement, the organization stated that he is being held in solitary confinement under harsh conditions and that his mental health has been damaged.

According to informed sources, this journalist was transferred without the family's knowledge from Pul-e-Charkhi prison to Bagram prison in late March 2025, and since then, he has been deprived of access to a lawyer and medical services.

Organizations defending freedom of expression have repeatedly asked the Taliban to stop detaining and pressuring journalists and to provide the ground for free media activity.

Hamid Farhadi's brother, a journalist imprisoned in Taliban captivity, has stated that more than fourteen months have passed since his detention, and there is still no news of his release.
