International organizations: 90 percent of ten-year-olds are unable to read a simple text

Data analysis from these organizations in 2022 shows that educational poverty is at an unprecedented level, with over 90 percent of ten-year-old children unable to read and write a simple text.

According to the report, the ban on secondary education for girls has deprived approximately 2.2 million adolescent girls of education. While boys' enrollment in secondary education has remained stable, their enrollment in higher education has decreased by about 40 percent between 2019 and 2024. This situation has made Afghanistan's education system one of the weakest links in the world.

The national literacy rate in Afghanistan in 2021 was only 37 percent (52 percent for men and 27 percent for women), which is considered one of the lowest rates globally.

Afghanistan's education system faces political, financial, and human challenges. In 2025, it is estimated that 8.9 million children, including 888,000 children with disabilities, will urgently need educational support.

Meanwhile, the large-scale return of refugees from Iran and Pakistan since 2023 has involved approximately 2.7 million people, 60 percent of whom are children and youth.

These organizations have urged the Taliban authorities to immediately lift the ban on secondary and higher education for girls and women, allowing all Afghan girls and women to return to classrooms. Otherwise, if these bans continue, by 2030, nearly four million girls will be deprived of the opportunity to continue their secondary education.

UNICEF and UNESCO organizations, in a report on the state of education in Afghanistan in 2025, have stated that over 2.13 million primary school-age children still have not attended school by 2024, while most children who are studying also lack effective and sufficient learning opportunities.
