The first formal contact between foreign ministers of India and Taliban provoked strong reactions.

Jaishankar, on Thursday, 25 Saur, in a note on X, expressed appreciation for the Taliban’s condemnation of the Pehalgam attack in Kashmir and described Muttaqi’s efforts to refute "false reports" of Indian attacks on Afghanistan as positive.

He also highlighted India’s historical ties with the Afghan people and confirmed discussions on ways for future cooperation. Meanwhile, the contact between the foreign ministers of India and the Taliban has faced sharp reactions from several Afghan political and civil figures.

Narges Nehan, a former Afghan government minister, called the move "India’s turning away from the Afghan people" and emphasized that the Taliban are not reliable partners.

On the other hand, Fawzia Koofi, a former parliamentarian, stated that India has prioritized geopolitical interests over values.

Bahar Mehr, a political activist, described India’s contact with the Taliban as an "embarrassing moment" for Delhi’s diplomacy.

S. Jaishankar, India's Foreign Minister, announced that he had a telephone conversation with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s Foreign Minister, for the first time.
