Taliban release video of 'forced confession' of imprisoned journalist Mehdi Ansari

affiliated with the Taliban broadcast this video on Thursday (10th of Mizan), in which Mehdi Ansari confesses to having been in contact with some exiled media outlets.


In the video, which is unclear under what conditions it was recorded, Mehdi Ansari says he created fake social media accounts to promote propaganda against the Taliban regime.


At the same time, sources say that Mehdi Ansari’s physical and mental health in Taliban custody is severely deteriorated.


Although the exact date of the video’s recording is unclear, it appears that these confessions were recorded in the early stages of his detention.


According to reports, members of the Taliban’s intelligence service arrested Mehdi Ansari on the 14th of Mizan last year in the Pul-e-Khushk area of Dasht-e-Barchi, Kabul.


Amnesty International has previously expressed concern multiple times about the mistreatment and torture of this journalist in Taliban custody, calling for his unconditional release.


Reports indicate that the Taliban has sentenced this journalist to one and a half years in prison on charges of collaborating with foreign media and publishing content against the group, without access to a lawyer or his family.
