India upgrades its representation in Kabul to embassy level

According to Business Standard, this action follows the recent meeting between Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s Foreign Minister, and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in New Delhi.

The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that upgrading the representation to the level of an embassy is a sign of New Delhi’s commitment to expanding bilateral relations and cooperation in developmental and humanitarian fields.

India, which evacuated its personnel from Kabul after the fall of the previous Afghan government in 2021, sent a technical delegation to Kabul in 2022 to follow up on projects; this delegation has now been elevated to the level of an embassy.

Both sides have also agreed to expand economic cooperation, resume commercial air routes, and invest in mining. India has pledged to support several new projects, including the construction of a 30-bed hospital in Bagram, Kabul.

Prior to 2021, India played an active role in over 500 infrastructure projects in Afghanistan.

The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that New Delhi, on Tuesday, 29 Mizan, officially upgraded its technical representation in Kabul to the level of the Indian Embassy in Afghanistan, a decision that has been implemented immediately.
