Taliban official: Trump's remarks about Bagram are 'far from reality and disgusting'

Taliban’s Ministry of Interior spokesperson, in an interview with The Telegraph newspaper on Saturday, said: “We strongly condemn these statements. Trump’s remarks are not only baseless and far from reality but are also full of hatred. When someone speaks on behalf of a country, they should speak based on facts.”

He emphasized that the Bagram Airbase will never be handed over to American forces and that the Taliban’s stance on the presence of foreign military forces is “completely clear and unchangeable.”

This position comes as Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s Foreign Minister, had previously stressed that the Taliban is not willing to “cede even an inch of Afghanistan’s soil” for the presence of foreign military forces, and the group’s interactions with the United States will solely be in the political and economic spheres.

Donald Trump, the U.S. President, has repeatedly emphasized the strategic importance of Bagram, describing it as vital for military and surveillance objectives concerning China and the region. In his recent statements, he claimed that negotiations to reclaim the base are underway.

Trump’s remarks have also sparked reactions beyond Afghanistan. Chinese government officials have warned that Washington should refrain from fueling tensions and confrontations in the region, while Russia has emphasized that decisions regarding the fate of the Bagram Airbase should be left to the people of Afghanistan.

Abdul Mateen Qani, spokesperson for the Taliban’s Ministry of Interior, in response to recent statements by Donald Trump regarding the reclamation of the Bagram Airbase, described these remarks as “far from reality and with hatred.”
