Pakistan says ceasefire with Afghan Taliban aims to combat terrorism

In an interview with Al Jazeera, he stated that both sides have agreed to establish joint mechanisms to address security concerns and prevent the recurrence of conflicts.

According to Khawaja Asif, diplomatic mediations by Qatar and Turkey played a key role in achieving this agreement, and their cooperation is "a guarantee of the credibility and durability of the ceasefire."

Referring to recent border clashes between the forces of the two countries, Pakistan's Defense Minister added that both sides have now concluded that the root cause of tensions is the activities of terrorist groups, which must be addressed decisively.

He said Pakistan has suffered heavy losses due to terrorism in recent years and hopes that this agreement will be an effective step toward restoring stability to the region.

Asif also spoke of the potential for improving economic and transit relations between the two countries, adding: "With the implementation of this agreement, the trade and transit route between Afghanistan and Pakistan can be reactivated."

According to him, Afghanistan will once again be able to use Pakistan's ports for trade, and refugees with valid documents will be allowed to stay in the country; however, individuals without legal documents will continue to be returned to Afghanistan.

The Defense Minister emphasized that border control between the two countries must be more organized and based on international standards. He concluded by noting that it is still too early to assess the ultimate success of the ceasefire, and the level of commitment from both sides will become clear in the weeks and months ahead.

Khawaja Asif, Pakistan's Defense Minister, has announced that a ceasefire agreement between Islamabad and the Afghan Taliban has been reached with the aim of ending terrorist threats and establishing stability in border areas.
