168 people arrested on charges of deliberately setting forest fires in Türkiye

Yılmaz Tunç, Turkey’s Minister of Justice, stated on Wednesday (July 30) during a televised interview that in recent days alone, 39 more individuals have been detained on similar charges, and judicial rulings have been issued for 64 of these suspects so far.

Turkish media reported that in recent days, cities such as Bursa and Karabük have faced extensive wildfires. Published images from these areas show large columns of smoke and the intense efforts of firefighting forces and volunteers to contain the fires.

In one of the most severe cases, a wildfire in an area 150 kilometers east of Bursa claimed the lives of ten employees of the Forestry Department and volunteer rescue workers. Local authorities stated that the intensity of the fire and difficulties in access had significantly challenged fire containment operations.

Turkey’s Ministry of Interior announced that efforts to identify other potential culprits and contain the wildfires are ongoing. Meanwhile, some sources have suggested the possible involvement of sabotage groups in some of these incidents; however, official institutions have not yet provided further details.

In recent years, Turkey has repeatedly faced waves of forest fires, and climate change and drought have heightened concerns about the recurrence and intensification of such incidents.

Turkish authorities have announced that since the beginning of June this year, 168 individuals have been detained on charges of involvement in deliberate forest fires in the country. This comes as extreme heatwaves and drought have fueled the rapid spread of wildfires in various parts of Turkey.
