sources say Taliban, Pakistan talks to continue in Istanbul

According to sources, the meeting resumed on Tuesday afternoon, 6th of Aqrab, local time.

These talks, which began on October 25 (3rd of Aqrab), were expected to conclude after three days with the issuance of an official statement; however, due to unresolved disagreements, they have not yet reached a conclusion.

The main point of contention between the two sides is reported to be the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Pakistan’s official news agency (APP) reported that Islamabad has demanded that the Taliban take concrete and specific actions against this group.

In response, a Taliban official stated that “the TTP is an internal issue of Pakistan, not Afghanistan,” adding that this matter “is not new and should be resolved within Pakistan’s territory.”

Sources say that over the past three days, the delegations from both sides have exchanged several proposals and drafts; although official details of these proposals have not been disclosed, media outlets from both countries have provided differing accounts of their content.

Pakistan’s state news agency, quoting security sources, reported that the Pakistani delegation, in recent meetings, has conveyed its “final position” to the Afghan Taliban, emphasizing that any support by the Afghan Taliban for terrorist groups is unacceptable. According to these sources, Islamabad has demanded specific actions to end such support.

Pakistan has consistently accused the Afghan Taliban of providing shelter to TTP members and allowing them to use Afghan soil to launch attacks on Pakistan; however, the Taliban has rejected these claims, stating that no group is allowed to operate from Afghan soil against other countries.

On the other hand, the Taliban delegation in recent negotiations has demanded that Pakistan respect Afghanistan’s territorial sovereignty and refrain from any violations of its land and airspace. The Taliban has also proposed the establishment of a “joint monitoring mechanism” between the two countries to prevent border clashes and ensure a ceasefire.

The ongoing talks continue amidst severely strained relations between Kabul and Islamabad in recent months, with an increase in verbal and military confrontations between the two sides.

Informed sources in Turkey confirm that negotiations between Taliban representatives and Pakistani officials have continued for the fourth consecutive day in Istanbul.
