Austria repatriates first Afghan citizen since Taliban return to Kabul

According to media reports, the individual in question, who was convicted of "sexual assault and severe violence," was transferred from Vienna to Istanbul on Tuesday, 29 Mizan (21 October) after serving four years in prison, and then returned to Kabul.

Christian Stocker, the Chancellor of Austria, in response to this action, announced that his country will show no leniency toward foreign criminals, stating: "The law is the same for everyone; the safety of the Austrian people is our priority, and anyone who commits a crime will have no place in this country."

Gerhard Karner, Austria's Interior Minister, also confirmed that other cases are under review, and the process of deporting individuals whose residency has been revoked will continue. He added: "Several other cases are ready to be implemented, and this policy will be pursued decisively."

Austrian authorities have recently established contacts with the Taliban to facilitate the implementation of this decision. An Austrian delegation traveled to Kabul earlier this year, and in September, Taliban representatives visited Vienna to discuss the technical details of deporting refugees.

Reports indicate that approximately 30 other Afghan citizens may also be on the list for deportation to Afghanistan.

For the first time since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan, the Austrian government has deported an Afghan refugee from its territory.
