Nancy Pelosi resigns from US Congress after four decades of political activity

The 85-year-old representative from California said in a video message on Thursday that she will not participate in the upcoming congressional elections and added: "Our path has been historic, and now it is time for a new generation to continue this journey."


Pelosi entered Congress in 1987 and served as Speaker of the House twice, from 2007 to 2011 and from 2019 to 2023. She was an influential figure in the Democratic Party and played a pivotal role in both impeachments of Donald Trump.


Following her retirement announcement, Trump reacted sharply, calling Pelosi a "wicked woman," while many Republicans chose to remain silent.

Nancy Pelosi, the first woman in U.S. history to serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives, announced after more than four decades in politics that she is retiring from political life.
