Another Afghan asylum seeker arrested in the US on charges of collaborating with ISIS

According to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security, Safi had entered the United States under the "Operation Allies Welcome" program.

Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, stated that he had provided financial and logistical support to the Khorasan ISIS group and had procured weapons for his father, the commander of a militia group in Afghanistan.

Safi entered the United States in September 2021 and had applied for Temporary Protected Status; however, after the program was discontinued, his case was put on hold.

The U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security added: "Jan Shah Safi was arrested near the capital, in the same area where, just a few days ago, two National Guard members were targeted in a shooting by another Afghan refugee."

With this arrest, pressure has mounted on the program to resettle Afghans in the United States since the fall of Kabul. Previously, Mohammad Dawood Alkozai was arrested on charges of making bomb threats, and Rahmanullah Laknwal was detained for attacking National Guard forces in Washington. In the recent attack, a female soldier was killed and another person was injured.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that Jan Shah Safi, an Afghan refugee, was arrested in Virginia on charges of collaborating with the Khorasan ISIS group. Safi had been relocated to the United States after 2021, and this marks the third arrest involving Afghans in terrorism-related cases in less than a week.
