UNESCO calls for global pressure on Taliban to reopen education centers

On Friday (24 Asad), Azoulay announced in a statement that the Taliban have issued more than 70 restrictive decrees against women and girls over the past four years. She emphasized: "Today, Afghanistan is, tragically, the only country in the world where secondary and higher education for girls is prohibited."

According to UNESCO statistics, approximately 2.2 million girls in Afghanistan have been deprived of education due to the Taliban's policies. The organization has warned that if these restrictions continue, more than four million people will be excluded from education.

The UNESCO Director-General also stated that the exclusion of women from public life has catastrophic consequences for Afghanistan's sustainable development and noted that since 2021, more than 80 percent of women working in the media have lost their jobs.

After returning to power, the Taliban have banned girls above the sixth grade and female university students from attending schools and universities.

Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, on the fourth anniversary of the Taliban's return to power, called on the countries of the world to increase their diplomatic pressure on the Taliban to reopen educational institutions to girls.
