Human rights defenders protest against forced burqa in Herat

In this gathering, women and men defending human rights symbolically set burqas ablaze and emphasized that clothing should not be compulsory, and that the Taliban's decision is contrary to human values and the fundamental principles of human rights.

One of the participants said: "A woman is not a shadow to be hidden; we have a voice, we have dreams, and we have the right to be seen."

Slogans such as "I am a woman, do not silence my voice" and "The burqa is a cage, not clothing" filled the atmosphere of the event. The protesters emphasized women's right to free presence in society and to have the freedom to breathe, see, and think.

In the final statement, the activists called on the international community not to remain silent in the face of the systematic oppression of women in Afghanistan. They stressed that the voice of Afghan women cannot be silenced.

In response to the Taliban's recent decision to make wearing the burqa mandatory in Herat, a number of civil society activists and members of human rights organizations announced their opposition to this action by holding a symbolic protest rally.
