public violence; Taliban whip 12 people, including two women, in Parwan

The court, on Tuesday, 4th of Sunbula, stated in a press release that these individuals received between 30 to 39 lashes in public.

The press release further noted that these defendants have also been sentenced to one to four years of imprisonment.

The Taliban Supreme Court also stated in another press release that an additional individual in Paktia has been sentenced to 30 lashes and six months of imprisonment on charges of theft.

Since their return to power, the Taliban have reported almost daily the implementation of flogging sentences on citizens across Afghanistan for various charges.

Human rights organizations and the United Nations have repeatedly expressed concern over the continuation of this trend, stating that defendants in the Taliban’s judicial system lack access to fair trials and legal representation.

Despite widespread criticism, the Taliban claim that their actions are in accordance with Sharia law and have consistently emphasized that they will not cease these measures.

The Taliban Supreme Court has announced that 12 individuals, including two women, have been publicly flogged on charges of illicit relationships, drug use, and drug trafficking.
