Amnesty International: Afghanistan needs international accountability mechanism

The organization stated in a statement that the proposed mechanism should be tasked with collecting, documenting, and analyzing evidence related to past and ongoing crimes, and pave the way for fair and impartial proceedings.

Amnesty International emphasized that the Taliban continues to impose widespread restrictions on the people of Afghanistan, particularly women and girls, and that the group’s actions could fall under the category of “crimes against humanity and gender-based persecution.”

The organization also noted that individuals critical of the Taliban’s policies and laws face arbitrary detentions, arrests, and even forced disappearances.

According to Amnesty International, the Taliban violates the fundamental rights of citizens and systematically discriminates against women and religious and ethnic minorities.

The statement also referenced a report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). According to this report, local Taliban authorities in Badakhshan province, between January and February of this year, forced at least 50 Ismaili citizens to convert their religion. Those who resisted were subjected to beatings or death threats, and their children were compelled to attend Sunni religious schools.

Amnesty International warned that Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis has been exacerbated not only by the Taliban’s policies but also by natural disasters and the forced deportation of Afghan migrants from neighboring countries, particularly Iran and Pakistan.

The organization clarified that former officials, journalists, and opponents of the Taliban are among the groups seriously at risk of human rights violations.

Amnesty International stated that the “culture of impunity,” which has persisted in Afghanistan for over four decades, is the root cause of the current situation, and only by establishing an international accountability mechanism can this cycle be stopped.

Amnesty International has called on the United Nations Human Rights to establish an independent international body to investigate human rights violations in.
