Typhoon Fung Wong Continues; Thousands Evacuated in Taiwan

This typhoon brought unprecedented rainfall to the mountainous regions in the eastern part of the island, leading to floods that in some areas reached as high as people's necks. Businesses and schools in most southern regions have been closed, and so far, 51 people have been reported injured.

Taiwan's Meteorological Administration has stated in a report that more than a thousand homes in the port city of "Su'ao" have experienced flooding. This city received 648 millimeters (25 inches) of rain on Tuesday, which counts as a record for this month.

Taiwan's Fire Department has also stated that approximately 8,300 residents, mostly in the "Yilan" and "Hualien" regions, have been transferred to safe shelters. Rainfall in these areas has increased due to monsoon winds from the north, as this typhoon has occurred at an unusual time, late in the season.

In September, another typhoon in Taiwan also caused flooding and the deaths of 18 people in the "Hualien" region.

Typhoon "Kong-rey" is expected to pass over the southern tip of Taiwan in the afternoon of Wednesday and enter the Pacific Ocean. This typhoon has lost much of its strength after passing through the Philippines, where 27 people lost their lives.

The persistence of Typhoon "Kong-rey" has caused severe flooding in Taiwan. Local authorities have announced that prior to the arrival of this weakened typhoon on Wednesday, 12 November, more than 8,300 people have been evacuated from at-risk areas.
