US President: We are in talks with the Taliban to retake Bagram Air Base

On Friday, September 19, Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House: “We should never have given it up.”

The U.S. President also announced on Thursday, September 18, during a joint press conference with Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, that the U.S. is working to bring the Bagram Air Base back under its control.

Meanwhile, Zaker Jalali, an official from the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in response to Trump’s statements, wrote in a post on X on Thursday, 27 Sunbula: “Donald Trump, beyond politics, is a successful businessman and dealmaker, and he raises the issue of retaking Bagram in the context of a deal.”

He added that Afghanistan and the United States need to engage with each other and can establish economic and political relations based on mutual respect and shared interests; however, any U.S. military presence in Afghanistan is unacceptable.

Zaker Jalali wrote: “Foreign military presence has never been accepted by Afghans throughout history, and this issue was completely rejected in the Doha negotiations.” He further noted that the doors for engagement in other areas remain open.

The Wall Street Journal, citing its sources, reported that the U.S. is in talks with the Taliban to return to the Bagram base with a military presence.

The news outlet also stated that Adam Boehler, who traveled to Afghanistan a few days ago accompanied by Zalmay Khalilzad, is the main official leading this mission.
