UN: Earthquake in northern Afghanistan causes no widespread damage or casualties

According to this body, experts, with support from the Swiss government, have assessed the affected areas by air, and "no signs of widespread destruction or mass displacement of people" have been observed in densely populated areas.

Richard Trenchard, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Afghanistan, has stated that the level of destruction is "much less" compared to the Kunar earthquake.

The United Nations has added that although no widespread displacement of people has been reported, damage to health centers and the shortage of female staff are among the major challenges for relief efforts in these areas.

The spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General has also stated that this body is in contact with the Taliban administration to assess damages and coordinate urgent assistance.

She emphasized that the people of northern Afghanistan were already facing drought, poverty, and a lack of services prior to this, and the return of millions of refugees this year has made the situation even more difficult.

Based on UN statistics, of the $2.4 billion budget for humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan, only nearly one-third has been funded so far, leaving a shortfall of about $1.5 billion.

Afghanistan lies in one of the world's active earthquake belts, and the UN Human Settlements Program says that construction resistant to earthquakes using local materials can reduce casualties from future earthquakes.

The United Nations has announced that initial assessments indicate that the early Monday earthquake in northern Afghanistan, unlike the severe earthquake in Kunar province in the month of Saure (September), has not caused widespread damage.
