From repression to desertion; Female journalists leave media following Taliban pressure

One of these sources, who wished to remain anonymous, said on Friday (10 Asad) in a conversation with Exile that due to the Taliban's recent restrictions on media, the atmosphere of fear among journalists, especially women, has intensified.

According to this source, who is a senior employee of a private media outlet in Kabul, the increasing pressures from the Taliban have caused several female journalists at this outlet to abandon their collaboration.

Local journalists say that the publication of videos of "forced confessions" by some media figures through outlets close to the Taliban has made the work environment in media extremely tense. Many journalists, especially women, are concerned that continuing their media activities could lead to serious security consequences. This situation has led to increased self-censorship, job abandonment, and efforts to leave the country among media activists.

Previously, the Afghanistan Journalists Center announced in a statement that at least seven journalists had been detained by the Taliban in the past three weeks.

The center, based on its statistics, reported that at least 11 journalists and media workers are currently in Taliban detention or serving prison sentences.

According to reports from media organizations, over 500 cases of detention, violence, and threats against journalists have been recorded since the Taliban's takeover.

This comes as the Taliban, over the past four years, have imposed extensive restrictions and censorship on the media, and the recent detentions are seen as part of this trend.

Local sources from a media outlet in Kabul say that following the broadcast of forced confessions of journalists and media workers, several female journalists from this outlet have left their jobs due to security concerns, an atmosphere of fear, and repression.
