British Ministry of Defense reports 49 data breaches involving Afghan citizens

According to the report, four of these 49 cases had previously been publicly disclosed, including a data leak in 2022 that involved a comprehensive file containing details of nearly 19,000 individuals fleeing from the Taliban.

Following the disclosure of this information, thousands of Afghan citizens were secretly relocated to the UK. This information was revealed last month after a censorship order was lifted by the High Court.

The UK Ministry of Defence has refrained from providing details about each breach; however, previously publicized cases included the unintentional disclosure of applicants’ email addresses and other personal information to third parties.

Nevertheless, lawyers representing Afghan citizens affected by these data breaches have stated that the new statistics, released in response to a BBC request under the Freedom of Information Act, heighten their concerns about a culture of security negligence among staff involved in the resettlement scheme.

It is worth noting that the “Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy” (ARAP) was launched in April 2021 to assist those whose lives were at risk due to their collaboration with British armed forces in Afghanistan, facilitating their relocation along with their families to the UK. The scheme was closed in July this year.

The program has consistently been accompanied by revelations about weak data security. This issue has likely endangered the lives of Afghan citizens who collaborated with British forces.

The UK Ministry of Defence has admitted in a report that over the past four years, 49 data breaches have occurred in the applications for the relocation of Afghan citizens seeking asylum in the UK.
