US seeks Security Council consensus to create international force in Gaza

Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, announced on Thursday that Washington is hopeful for the resolution's passage and that consultations to finalize its text are ongoing. He stated: "We have drawn closer to a common language and hope that practical steps will be taken soon. We do not want the process of forming this force to be halted."

Based on the initial text, this international force is set to begin its two-year operations starting in January. The force will operate under a unified command and in full coordination with Egypt and Israel, while also collaborating with trained Palestinian police forces to ensure border security.

The force's responsibilities include overseeing the disarmament of armed groups, preventing military activities, protecting civilians, supporting humanitarian operations, assisting in the training of Palestinian police, and securing entry points for aid.

Turkey's Ministry of Defense has issued a cautious welcome to the plan, stating that it expects this international force to help preserve the fragile ceasefire in Gaza. Turkey is interested in participating in this mission; however, Israel has opposed Ankara's involvement.

Meanwhile, concerns among some regional countries regarding the prominent roles of Qatar and Turkey in Gaza's reconstruction process have led certain parties to withdraw from participating in the formation of this stability force.

International media have reported that the United States is working to garner the support of United Nations Security Council members for the approval of a resolution that would establish and deploy an international force aimed at maintaining stability in Gaza. According to U.S. officials, this plan was drafted over the past month and incorporates the perspectives of several regional countries, including Qatar, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.
