Sanae Takaichi on the verge of becoming Japan's first female prime minister

She is scheduled to replace Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Tuesday, October 21, following a parliamentary vote.

This decision was announced after the right-wing opposition party, the Japan Innovation Party (Ishin), declared its support for Takaichi's premiership.

The 64-year-old Takaichi, if successful in the parliamentary vote, will put an end to three months of political vacuum and discord following the coalition's defeat in the July elections.

Sanae Takaichi, leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, is on track to become the country's first female prime minister.
